SITAV S.p.A.

Company

SITAV SpA is a privately owned Italian family-run company, part of an industrial group whose origins date back to the 1960s, and a leader in Italy in the railway rolling stock sector. SITAV mainly operates in the maintenance, upgrading and construction of rolling stock and also holds ECM certification for functions I, II, III and IV. Specifically, its activities are structured as follows:

I.) Maintenance: SITAV performs maintenance on rolling stock used for regional passenger transport, high-speed passenger transport, metro systems and freight. The company carries out corrective, scheduled and preventive maintenance on the entire Italian high-speed FRECCIAROSSA fleet, with reference to the rolling stock ETR 500, ETR 700 and ETR 1000. These maintenance activities are performed both at SITAV’s own rail-connected workshops and through work sites at customer premises such as Trenitalia, Trenord and FS Logistix;

II.) Upgrading: SITAV designs and carries out modification and upgrading activities on rolling stock at the rail-connected workshop in Rottofreno (Piacenza), in Emilia-Romagna. These activities aim to regenerate vehicles equipped with structural fabrication components—such as load-bearing frames and bogies—that are still in good condition but have outdated onboard technologies and interiors that are no longer suitable for standard service and no longer compliant with the latest regulatory requirements. The result is a vehicle that meets the most modern needs in terms of safety, comfort and performance, while using less raw material and consequently reducing lead times and costs. These activities are in line with Sustainable Development Goals 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure), 12 (Responsible consumption and production) and 13 (Climate action);

III.) Production: Thanks to complete and specialized industrial capabilities—from metal fabrication to electromechanical assembly and painting—SITAV is able to meet requests for complete railway products for niche markets, such as small series of vehicles or shunting locomotives. The company’s skills and capacity enable it to independently develop all the main phases of the process, from raw material to commissioning of the railway vehicle;

IV) Engineering/Design: The company has its own in-house department dedicated to railway engineering and design, from individual components to the management of the entire system. This makes it possible to independently tackle challenging projects in the fields of maintenance and rolling stock construction.

SITAV counts among its customers and partners the major Italian railway companies, including Trenitalia, Trenord, Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal, FS Logistix, ATM, TPER, Hellenic Train and AMT.

In addition to the partners mentioned above, it also works with major railway vehicle manufacturers operating in Italy and internationally, such as Alstom, Hitachi Rail, SIEMES and Stadler.

SITAV’s strongly innovative spirit is evidenced by several initiatives in the field of innovation. The latest R&D activities include:
- investments in additive manufacturing technology for 3D printing of metal alloys (stainless steel, aluminium and titanium alloys);
- investments to develop a remote diagnostic monitoring system to be applied to rolling stock;
- investments for the study, design and development of a prototype hydrogen-powered locomotive using fuel cells;
- investments to define and implement an AI and augmented reality model to be applied to rolling stock maintenance activities.
