SITAV Rolls Out Hydrogen Locomotive Prototype at HYDROGEN EXPO, Eyes 2025 Rail Debut

SITAV unveils its first hydrogen-powered locomotive at HYDROGEN EXPO, signaling its entry into the railway manufacturing sector
The prototype features low-pressure hydrogen refueling, energy recovery, modularity, and remote diagnostics, with preliminary approval already secured
SITAV has officially entered the hydrogen rail sector with the debut of its first hydrogen-powered locomotive prototype at the fourth edition of HYDROGEN EXPO. The presentation marks a significant milestone for the Piacenza-based firm, traditionally known for its maintenance and overhaul services, now positioning itself among rolling stock manufacturers. "A great achievement that brings our company into the galaxy of rolling stock manufacturers," the company stated proudly. The locomotive has already cleared initial approval phases and is on track for deployment.
Developed with the support of partners O.M.G. MANUFACTURING S.p.A., BluEnergy Revolution Soc. Coop., and DAKO-CZ, the prototype was designed with safety, efficiency, and versatility in mind. Key features include optimal cabin visibility for operational safety, a low-pressure hydrogen system for simplified refueling, and regenerative braking for energy recovery. Remote diagnostics capabilities are also integrated to streamline maintenance, while the modular design enables customization for various applications. The entire unit is “absolutely made in Italy,” reinforcing SITAV’s industrial roots and commitment to domestic innovation.
SITAV highlighted that the experience gained through this project not only supports future new builds but also positions the company to undertake hydrogen-based modernizations of existing locomotives. The next public appearance for the hydrogen locomotive will be at EXPO Ferroviaria in Milan, running from September 30 to October 2, 2025. The event will serve as a broader platform for SITAV to demonstrate its growing capabilities in sustainable rail mobility.
